The Chamber Welcomes You
Our Town
Blessed with a rich and varied history, Crawfordsville and Montgomery County, located on
the banks of Sugar Creek, offer visitors and residents alike a true feel of midwestern life.
Crawfordsville, the county seat has consistently appeared in rankings of the 100 Best
Small Towns in America. Known as “the Athens of Indiana” since the early 1900’s for its
culture, progressiveness, and abundance of nationally known writers, Crawfordsville today still embodies many of these same qualities. Two of our most treasured cultural amenities are the Lew Wallace Study, where the famed Civil War General wrote the novel Ben-Hur; and Wabash College, an all-male private liberal arts college founded in 1832.
In addition to our cultural heritage, Montgomery County is well positioned geographically,
between the metropolitan areas of Lafayette and Indianapolis, to continue enjoying
economic prosperity.
Our local economy is quite diverse, ranging from agriculture to large-scale industrial
manufacturers. The retail scene offers something for everyone with nationally recognized
merchants, as well as one-of-a-kind niche retailers. Crawfordsville’s still vibrant downtown business district, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places,is currently in the midst of a revitalization supported by Crawfordsville Main Street, which promises to make our downtown truly unique with many more specialty businesses.
